What Bugs Me
Cyclists running red lights and riding abreast: Obey the rules please

STOMPer Ailin is fed up with rule-breaking cyclists who run red lights and who ride side-by-side, hogging lanes and forcing other vehicles to change lane unnecessarily.

The STOMPer wrote:

"Have you ever seen cyclists in Singapore beating the red light and cycling side-by-side?

"Well this behavior is not only inconsiderate, but also dangerous.

'Sometimes they can be quite irritating, especially if you are a bus driver. Because they 'take over' the extreme left lane and sometimes even occupy the middle lane, heavy vehicles like buses and trucks have to change lane unnecessarily.

"And because they don't follow the traffic rules, they can easily overtake vehicles by beating the red light or when a bus stops at a bus stop.

"And the whole cycle of over taking and being taken over can go on for a very long distance.

"Maybe in some other countries, cyclists are allowed to use the road in the way they want, but here in Singapore, where roads are much busier and lanes are relatively narrower, cyclists have to follow the traffic rules even more strictly.

'Being one of the many road users who share the precious three-lane-space on the road, every one of us has to learn to be more considerate, for others' convenience and for our own safety."

After reading ALL the posts. Here are Some of my thoughts. 1st. I don't see a beating of a red light. 2nd. Singapore should not consider itself a first world nation when IT does not even have proper bike lanes for cyclists to use for transportation. And don't give me the usual road tax spouting lemming EXCUSES. Excuses are not REASONS. 3rd. I see 3 lanes in the pic with no traffic (probably a Sunday morning ride) with STOMPer Ailin in a turn lane (probably) leading to an intersection.

4th. When there are a "PACK" of cyclist. It is safer and good form for the cyclist to TAKE the lane. Both safer for cyclists and cars. 5th. I have been cycling all my life, for fun, training and transportation, and find it(in Singapore)the most efficient and fun way to get around here. 6th. Singapore a gracious nation? There is MORE than enough space for bike lanes and the "EXCUSE" that Singapore is to small for this. Well. If it's BIG enough for cars, then bikes should not be a problem. 8th. I have 12 more REASONS. I see nothing wrong in these pics. Ride long and prosper cyclists.

angdaoni is just another road tax spouting lemming but is not unlike the money thinking over living style in Singapore. Driving is a payed privilege. Cycling and being human powered is a rite. It is the FAULT of city planners that bike lanes had not been included. Singapore can never be considered a WORLD class country as others that have included cycling in it's road planning.

look, nobody here is defending cyclist who break the rules. All some of us are saying is its hardly the biggest issue on the block and its sure not enough to come on here making overly rude remarks about a whole race.

Remarks like some of you have made do nothing more than prove you have a chip on your shoulder.

Not all white people are rude, in fact, its the minority.

Just like not all cyclist break the rules.

Honestly, some of you act like a white cyclist here and there doing the wrong thing is enough to brand all ang mohs as rapists and murderers.

SureorNot and co are steadfast in their convictions, I respect that. Its just to me there are many more worse things in the world to worry about....And well, who are we all to judge a cyclist doing wrong? always us your blinker? never do anything wrong ever? thought not.

Do not miss out this one as well - I remember seeing early last year this caucasian cyclist (half-naked as well) being stopped by 2 cars at Upper Bukit Timah Road, and 3 local man came out and pointed their fingers at this jerk, because he had dashed across a junction when the light is red, and almost caused the cars who was turning right from the opposite to crash onto him (how I wish they did...)!

Read more about these obnoxious and inconsiderate cyclists...unfortunately, many are the caucasians who think they can lord over Singapore motorists:

I have no problem with them riding abreast since we are all sharing the same road. But since we are all sharing the same road, they also have to obey the same rules. And like stomper Ailin, I have seen many times they just beat the red light like nobody business.

My message to cyclists is this. If you want to share the road with the drivers, then please obey the traffic rules like everyone else.
