What Bugs Me
So 'suay': Insurance company sends ominous single chopstick in ad mailer

STOMPer WKF received a single chopstick in a mailer from an insurance company. The STOMPer feels this was an insensitive move, as the Chinese believe that a single chopstick could mean bad luck as a pair of chopsticks symbolises a couple supporting their family and each other.

Said the STOMPer:

"AIA is insensitive to its Chinese customers.

"Regardless of the content, I find that AIA is very insensitive to its Chinese customers when sending out such letters.

"The negative impact of sending out a single chopstick is not less than sending out a clock to its customers, or even putting a customer's photo on the car and telling him that he won the car.

"Chopsticks come in a pair.

"In a Chinese belief, a pair of chopsticks symbolises a couple. Both sticks are supporting each other to maintain a good family and a relationship.

"'When one stick is down, the family will fall apart and the relationship will break down.'

"The other single stick cannot stand long without much support.

"Worse, I got this letter just before Chinese New Year.

"Is AIA trying to tell me that my family's health might be in danger this year and wants me to buy insurance from them?

"From now on, I will not buy insurance from the company which sent me the single chopstick."

Its about time AIA revise their marketing team, whom make out their version of symbolization of the things without concerning their origin.

Regardless of race, company should be sensitive even to the minority in such multi-races country.

Well SG treats races and religion with equality.
Even job ad are told not to be racist.

Thus big company should factor in alot of study in cultures and beliefs when dealing with multi-races countries.

People whom have yet or never encounter may reflect their negative comment. However people whom believe has either encountered , seen or heard some significant event.

Its just like treating the Ang Mo a bowl of shark fin soup. If we know that they beleive shark is a protected animal and killing a shark and eating only the fin is wrong. We will treat them other soup as a respect for their beliefs.

AIA sucksss. I cancelled my Health Plan with them because they are unable to upgrade it at their customer Svc counter.
The staff at the counter says I need to go thru an agent if I need to upgrade my plan.
Meaning sorry pls call ur agent.
Than wat the fock is a customer Svc centre for when it can't provide even the basic Svc.
Shame on such a big insurance company.
Anyway I walked out and went to NTUC Income.
The staff at counter directed me to one of the agent situated there and i got it done on the same day .
Bye bye AIA.

Seriously, stomper pang tang to the max. Why apply meaning to everything. I think their marketing is effective. We are all commenting about it and we will remember the ad. Folks like the stomper are a little minority. I don't think many Singaporeans think much of it.
