STOMPer Adeline recently received a letter from a secondary school which stated that all students had to purchase the newly-introduced standard school shoes which cost $25 for a pair and comes with two pairs of socks. If one cannot afford the shoes, can one still go to school, wonders the STOMPer.
Wrote Adeline (Nov 1):
"What a school rule!
"Was looking at a letter from a neighbourhood school in the north; it said that all students have to purchase the school shoes for the year 2012. It cost $25/pair.
"The question is, is this necessary? The school rules state that as long as the school shoes are white, it should be okay.
"There isn't a need for this. It's unreasonable.
"If you don't purchase the shoes within 6 months, you can't go in to the school to study? Does the Ministry of Education have this rule?
"Yes, it the school which has the authority to set the school rules, but is this really necessary?
"What if I'm poor and I can't buy the shoes? So I can't attend school because of this?
"The school should really reflect on it!"
