Singapore Airlines has announced its new budget carrier which will start ferrying passengers from mid-2012. The airline will be called 'Scoot'. STOMPer Blue feels the name is childish and not classy.
The budget carrier will start with a fleet of four B777-200 aircraft purchased from its parent company, Singapore Airlines (SIA). It will offer no-frills service on medium to long haul routes to and from Singapore, and Scoot will be managed and run independently from SIA.
Airfares will go at up to 40% less than full carriers, with customisation available to its passengers. The airline will operate from Changi Airport Terminal 2 and will feature flights to Australasia, China and other countries in its first year, with booking opening in early 2012.
Branded as 'not your usual airline', Scoot aims to be different with its 'short, sharp and snappy' name. However, international aviation fans and STOMPer Blue do not feel the same way.
Said the STOMPer:
"It's really called 'Scoot'? At first, I thought it was a joke. No offence, SIA, but I think this new baby of yours really does not match your usual dignified image.
"I know it's a budget carrier and not supposed to be branded in entirely the same way. But look at Levi's and Denizen; Giorgio Armani and Armani Exchange; these examples show you need not entirely rebrand your product just to make it a more affordable version.
"The word 'scoot' has many connotations. To me, it's telling me to 'go away', like 'shoo'.
"I was reading feedback on a forum and they said it even sounds vulgar, as there is some similar slang in other parts of the world that don't mean such nice things.
"And others label it as annoying, childish, goofy, and it doesn't sound like an airline's name. I feel so embarrassed as these are international aviation fans commenting on a Singapore airline.
"But on the other hand, should negative feedback turn around, perhaps people will soon take to saying, 'I Scooted here', or 'Let's Scoot out of here' or 'I am Scooting to Sydney' and so on."
