Oct 21 update: Two-year-old girl, Wang Yue, has died, said the hospital treating her. She was run over twice and left lying on the road, ignored by more than a dozen passers-by.
Netizens have expressed outrage over the callous attitude of the people who failed to come to the child's aid. One has even called the incident "the shame of the Chinese people".
The toddler was eventually pulled to the side by a trash collector who alerted her mother. Yue Yue is now reportedly in a coma but has been declared 'brain dead'. She could die any time.
Guangzhou police have said that the drivers of both vehicles have been arrested.
STOMPer Francis was disturbed when he saw the video, he said:
"I was alerted to this video by my friends. I couldn't believe such a tragedy happened and it seemed no one cared.
"Not one of the 18 passers-by even hesitated to help...they simply rushed off.
"Not only does it show their callousness, but also the general indifference towards such tragedies.
"Not even hesitating, it's as though the people have been ingrained to just ignore, and that such a thing is a common sight.
"I just feel so sad yet so angry while seeing those people walk away. This makes the accident an even bigger tragedy.
"However, I'm glad that the culprits have been caught and that netizens in the country are finally waking up to this horrible moral truth.
"I don't think this will happen here. We are so 'kaypo', someone will definitely inform the authorities and/or take photos.
"Plus we are a small country with a dense population. In such a crowded place like the hardware market, the police hotline will surely be jammed."
