What Bugs Me
Look at the mess left behind after East Coast Park event

Is littering permitted during an event, asked STOMPers who came across a trail of cups left discarded at East Coast Park. The rubbish was left behind after a running event that took place over the weekend.

One of the STOMPers, Kai, wrote:

"The half marathon event was already over with the crowd and excitement long gone.

"What is left in East Coast Park are unsightly trails of paper cups"

Another STOMPer who saw the mess, Rajesh, wrote:

"It seems that littering is allowed in Singapore - as long as it is part of an organized event.

"I noticed a pile of used cups at East Coast Park, after Marine Cove, this morning (Oct 3) at about 9:30am - there was also a similar pile not too far away.

"It is clear that these were left behind after an organized race or event earlier in the morning or the evening before.

"The relevant authorities should look into this problem and step up their enforcement - this is totally deplorable."

"The organizers should be made to pay a fine of $5.00 per cup found if they fail to clean up after the event."

STOMPer Soo, who saw the same kind of mess at three locations of the park, wrote:

"Paper cups were scattered along the jogging track at a few locations in the A, B and C sectors of East Coast Park.

"Do we need to clear up a place after use in future or do we follow the bad example set by this organiser?"

Just because we have cleaners, does it mean that we can be so cool about littering? This is just not right...

Fine the CEO. He is responsible for the event.

Wait, so the trash was left behind after the event, and the organisers didn't mobilise the volunteers and helpers to clean up? Tsk.

The event in question appears to be the Singapore Health Marathon: http://www.singhalfmarathon.com/ If we are disappointed by their lack of attention to maintaining the cleanliness of the route after the run, then I would think it's necessary to let them know how we feel about their irresponsible behaviour in this area.

Here's the contact details of the people behind the half marathon: http://www.singhalfmarathon.com/contact.html

I walked past there around 10pm last night after having dinner. And the mess was there, thought it was very unsightly, and it is so close to the sea, if strong winds come and blow all that trash in to the ocean, not good!
