Safe to eat? Japanese oden turns black when cooked

STOMPer odenboy says this pack of Japanese oden he purchased from NTUC FairPrice showed black spots when heated.

The STOMPer explained the curious phenomenon:

"I bought an oden set from NTUC FairPrice at Thomson Plaza on July 3.

"This afternoon, when I cooked it, to my horror black mouldy spots started to appear on some of the pieces!

"The expiry date of the oden set is stated as July 7. Since when did mould become part of oden?"

Mould needs time to grow, probably decomposed sugar due to overheating.
