Sludge in East Coast canals: Could this contribute to flooding?
Could this contribute to flooding, STOMPer Rajesh wonders, when he noticed that the canals in the vicinity of East Coast Park were clogged up with sludge, which is especially obvious at low tide.
The STOMPer said:
"I jog at East Coast Park every morning and I've been observing the canals.
"Within the last two weeks I noticed that sludge, sediment and debris were noticeable in the canals especially at low tide.
"These canals included one across the Neptune Court, one near the Seafood Centre and one that runs between Marine Parade and Neptune Court.
"I wonder how often these canals are cleared of sludge.
"Does this contribute to flooding in certain areas?"

Undammed canals directly adjoining the sea are also more prone to accumulating whatever each high tide leaves behind. Don't forget that S'pore's turbid sea is not very clean or clear due to various offshore port & reclamation activities.
On the other hand, if one observes silt/earth from construction sites, sludge or any waste matter being discharged into canals, one could contact PUB with the necessary details, so that the polluting culprit can be apprehended.
