Meant to be one of the biggest nights in K-pop, the Mnet Asian Music Awards ended up disappointing many fans, STOMPer KPoppa says. No-show artistes were not awarded despite clearly having higher public votes.
The MAMA ceremony was held overseas in Macau for the first time last night.
Fans across Asia glued themselves to the couch to watch their favourite K-pop acts perform and be recognised. Unfortunately, not all of them found the results to be fair.
With the exception of singer Rain, other artistes who didn't show up were not awarded, KPoppa says.
Super Junior, in particular, lost to 2PM in the Best Male Group category despite having garnered more votes from the public.
Dance group SHINee also failed to pick up any awards despite showing strong sales results and having a strong Korean and international following.
Although the eventual winners are very talented, KPoppa feels that the awards were given out based purely on who turned up for the event.
The issue has become hot topic on cyberspace, with the term "MAMA= Missing Artists Missing Awards" trending like wild fire on social networking site Twitter.
KPoppa says:
"I believe I'm not the only one that is extremely disappointed with the way MAMA turned out.
"It was a big joke, the way winners were chosen.
"Except for Bi (Rain), all the artistes who didn't turn up were not awarded even though they should have been.
"Super Junior and SHINee were left out because they didn't turn up and 2PM won Best Male Group instead.
"Don't get me wrong, I am a 2PM fan as well. But it is outrageous when results from the online voting round clearly showed that Super Junior was the winner.
"I am happy to see 2PM's work being recognised. I just wish it wasn't simply because they turned up for an event and their contenders didn't.
"It doesn't feel like a good win this way.
"Besides, 2NE1 might be talented but it seems weird that a young group like them was able to sweep up the four awards they were nominated for.
"SNSD is known to be the most popular Korean girl group these days but won nothing because they didn't turn up.
"The whole ceremony was just not transparent enough and I feel like Mnet is treating fans like fools".

My Opinion, No offense
out of topic...
@Shesaysso. Snsd debut-ed in 2007. Know them since 2008. Kpop in sg wasnt much of Suju, maybe just sorry, sorry and nobody. but are there any hardcore suju fans now? maybe a little. hardly seeing any wg fans
SNSD: SMent company
Super Junior: SMent company
Shinee: sment company
I don't deny SUJU's success. They're huge in Asia.
But in Korea, Big Bang's the deal. SHINee, SUJU, B2ST and so on are huge these days. But trust me, in Korea, number 1's always DBSK and number 2's always Big Bang. You can check out their fan club status and the hype they get on the Korean entertainment world.
There are a lot of new kpop fans these days. Singapore started getting hyped up with Kpop in the later year of 2009 only-____- I could say it was thanks to Nobody and Sorry Sorry... Ring Ding Dong and so on. So the fans these days think that SUJU, SHINee, Girls Generation, B2ST and so on are like the TOP stars.
Well they are but seriously go back to 2008.
2008 was prolly the epic year of Kpop.
And to add on, artists such as Super Junior and SHINee were just added in the voting system for show. Everybody knows that with the MNET and SM Entertainment fued, there was no way that those groups were going to win any awards anyway. Wait, bet you didn't know that considering you wrote this dumb article.
Also, you obviously don't know talent when you see it. 2NE1 has worked hard and is well-known even in the States. Yes, SNSD may be the most popular Korean girl group but that's also because they've been in this industry for 3 years while 2NE1 has only debuted for a year.
The fans aren't fools. You are.
