Romanian ex-envoy released from detention: "Are we doing enough to put him in jail?"

STOMPer cxuanfei is disappointed to receive news on the release of the Romanian envoy from detention after he was accused of being involved in a hit-and-run accident in Singapore last year.

Silviu Ionescu, 50, a former charge d'affaires based in Singapore, is accused of hitting three pedestrians in a hit-and-run accident in Bukit Panjang on Dec 15 last year. The accident left one of the victims, Malaysian assistant manager Tong Kok Wai, 30, dead.

He has been in jail for about six months , but a Romanian court has granted his request to be released from detention by Saturday for the duration of the trial, unless prosecutors filed an appeal.

STOMPer cxuanfei said in his email:

"Is Singapore doing enough to see him behind bars?

"He is being released in the next 24 hours according to The Straits Times report.

"Has Singapore forgotten about the incident?"

S'pore Goverment is not doing enough neither is Mfa.The case has been dragging till the dead has gone to the grave & the injured ones still coming to terms with the incident. What case is there to file some more,he thinks he can get away scott free, what has happen to our strict laws.Like these all Envoys with Immunity can get away with murder & walk away with it.I certainly hope S'pore is doing justice not injustice. He & his pack of lies. Are we to keep quiet & let Romania law decided what to do what they want.SO if they don't persecute him,S'pore just sit back & relax & do nothing about it.I tyhink all Sporeans deserve an explanation ,we have not forgotten the incident & I think Romania is taking too long to decide.

Just wonder would the ending be the same if the victim killed were to be the immediate family of a high profile government figure? Why is he being released so easily? and the rep from Singapore didn't do anything?

i think our foreign minister ought to give an explanation to all citizen of s'pore and let us know what kind of action will s'pore take in account of Romania court decision which decide to release him from detention. i hope s'pore foreign ministry is not trying to say they are powerless to do anything if Romania decide not to prosecute this guy. if that is true i guess this episode have really let the whole of s'pore down as 3 life lost and the culprit goes scot-free. I guess he is now having a good fling and drinking martini now sponser by Romania govt for putting up a good show for them.
