STOMPer Vassili was infuriated when he came across an article in an Australian news website, branding Singaporeans as being rude.

Said the STOMPer:

"I am enraged to come across a column on a The Sydney Morning Herald website that label Singaporeans as being rude.

"In the article 'Singaporeans asked to chew on their manners', this so-called reporter Tamara Thiessen said that even though various courtesy campaigns are 'thrust down their throats daily', they are useless because Singaporeans are incorrigible and that we 'lack the initiative to care'.

"She even suggested that we are money-minded and that we go to church just to 'network'.

"Now I don't know which school of journalism Ms Thiessen went to, but even a dimwit can tell that her article is stereotyping and hypocritical at best.

"Sure, there are some rude Singaporeans, but there are rude people in every country. And I know for a fact that Australia is not a country of angels.

"This reporter needs to look at her country in one huge mirror before being all hoity-toity! That's the problem with people from some 'countries', they act like their the best in the world, they're so 'kaypoh' about other people's business, but they don't know how to take care of their own dirty linen.

"Please lah, for every rude person in Singapore, I can find 10 racists in Australia. I've been to Melbourne and the Gold Coast, and I know what it's like to be an Asian there.

"Once when I was paying for food at a diner, the waitress refused to look at me, even though I was the one paying, and she talked to my Australian friend instead! Even my Australian friend noticed it and she said later she felt so embarrassed.

"And my Asian friends have been called 'chinks' (a derogatory term for Asians) when they were there.

"And when you're at the airport, they only seem to stop and question the Asians, maybe because we're weird looking?

"I think the reason why we have many campaigns, and why we keep our country 'clean and green' is because we respect ourselves and our visitors.

"I strongly suggest Ms Thiessen go write another article suggesting some courtesy campaigns for Australia too. Maybe some racial-tolerance campaigns would be good as well. Lots of it."

Another STOMPer, Singaporester, agrees. She said:

"The reporter had the cheek writing about Singaporeans being rude, when she could have made better use of her time writing about things that are more relevant to her country, like the violent racial attacks on foreign Asian communities living there.

"It's a case of the pot calling the kettle black."

I'm Asian...and i was in AUS for 3 years. And yes, Singaporean people are very rude and have low manner, that makes us, Asian race, looks bad over there. The more educated Singaporean are, the more money-minded and rude (like a snake).

And when Aussie deal with these rude singaporean, they started think 'Oh...Asian ppl are low class and rude'. I've met a few singapore in both Sydney and in Perth, almost all of them are such a scam of the earth.

I visited to singapore for two months, and wow....people are worse there. Old ladies are rude, guys are always trying to rip you off. The only place i feel good and comfortable is Clarkque coz tht's where i dun see these rude *****s and be with fun ppl.

Thank you Singapore, for making us (all asian) looks bad abroad.

I am SINGAPOREAN and proud to be one. We won accolades in many fields even though we are just a little dot on the map. Do i need to say more. I don't mean to stereotype all Aussies, but there are obvious racial cracks in their society they are themselves not proud of. Whoever chose to ignore their own backyards and criticize other nationalities or races do so at their own demise. A true journalist should pursue journalism in the purest form: fairness and objectivity. Surely everyone knows that even Singapore is no exception in producing a minority of undesirables, but this small group do not represent the majority. Moreover as a cosmopolitan society, we have a huge number of foreign nationals who may be mistaken for Singaporeans. Such foreign nationals who are not born and bred locally may display inappropriate behaviour that are inherent in their culture and upbringing.

No offence guys,
just browse through all the comments in this post.
You will see most comments are rude because some Singaporeans are still hiding the fact that we are rude.

If u are talking about 5-10yrs ago, Singaporeans are still ok.
These days, 7 out of 10 are rude.
The more "educated & well dressed" they are, the more surprises u will get when u speak to them!

Some Aussies are a joke in the metaverse too. At least, some Singaporeans don't openly criticize another nationality, lumping the whole lot with a few bad apples. Have they looked into the mirrors lately? I guess not because the jagged cracks on the mirror deterred them to do self-reflection.

Plus, guess what? The foreigners, in particular, the Westerners, are damn friendly. And I can, based on my own encounters, safely say 90% of them are friendly and not rude or stuck-up. Honestly, why get offended that we're called rude?

Take it as a comment worth reflecting on. Are we really that rude? If not, shall we all just TRY not to be rude so such losers can be proven wrong?

Which brings me to another point, who are these two Australians to tell us that we're rude. They, in fact, are being rude for generalizing on Singaporeans. It's their luck that they've bumped into rude citizens. I'm certainly sure there are nice people out there living in Singapore. So, Tamara and Paul Stapleton can just ***** off, seriously.

Oh I'm sorry, was I being rude?

Secondly, please, don't link this to racism. Racism is EVERYWHERE. Singapore, Australia, America, Britain, wherever.
