SMRT needs to hasten installation of screen doors at all platforms, says STOMPer JF, after learning about the death of a man who jumped onto the tracks at Tanah Merah MRT station yesterday.

The incident, which reportedly involved a man in his 20s, resulted in delayed train services affecting as many as 5,000 East-bound commuters for half an hour.

According to a report in The New Paper, the man was pronounced dead at 3:30pm yesterday.

This is not the first time that someone has fallen onto the tracks, says STOMPer JF, who hopes that SMRT can work to put in screen doors at all platforms as soon as possible.

Any longer, and more unnecessary deaths could occur, he says.

In an email, the worried STOMPer says:

"One more person has died on the tracks at Tanah Merah.

"If screen doors had been put in earlier, this would not have happened.

"I really wonder why it takes SMRT four years to install the safety doors.

"Singapore is a really efficient society. It should be possible for a company as large as SMRT to install this important feature without delay.

"Please don't risk anymore lives by delaying the project further.

"I hope SMRT will install screen doors before 2012. The public cannot wait any longer."

When I was standing at the Jurong East MRT platform, I ever taught that what happens suicide case happen again at other station. It is really a menace if such thing happens over and over again. Whether or not it is a suicide or an accident, there must a preventive action. When one project is completed at a station, others must quickly follow suit. To protect life doesn't need a long haul contract to complete. Just expedite the safety project quickly and you will feel save and sound..

Don't you get it? They have to earn the money to buy the materials. The money they earn will eventually ended up in somebody's wallet and it will be until 2024 when the door is finally finished. This is Singapore, as long as there wasn't anyone complaining to a foreign newspaper, the government will not do anything at all.

Looks like by 2012 Singapore population is going to drop. Then again, we will have to bring in more foreigners to help increase population. I have never noticed there is any work been carried out to reinforce the situation. Well, quick death less pain less hassel- go mrt station...

jumping into the mrt track when the train is pulling into the station WILL cause injuries to others, what if the 'driver' of the train do a sudden brake? it will cause people in the train to fall down, happens all the time

Actually, someone did told me why SMART cannot complete the screen doors...not because they are not trying hard but do you know that SMART can only start their installation at e end of the day in order not to interrupt our daily schedule. While all of us are sleeping, some of them are actually installing the screen door, so far what i heard was they have to remove certain things(takes abt hours) on the station floor before installing the door and they need to put all the parts back before the start of the 1st morning train(which is abt 6am in the morning). MRT closed at abt 12am and start at 6am, so they only have 6 hour for installation for all station in singapore.. and do you know how many station they need to install? Maybe next time u can count how many station we have in singapore...^^
