What Bugs Me
Residents ignore bins and insist on burning offerings on ground

Two STOMPers have written in separately to highlight the problem of residents not using the burning bins provided. Instead they are burning the offerings on walkways, and even on grass patches, leaving behind ugly burn marks.

STOMPer aveo5ster wrote:

"The burning bins in Boon Lay Place are under-utilised as people are burning offerings on the ground instead of in the bins provided.

"As result the common spaces and walkways become inconvenient for residents."

STOMPer Sarina highlighted the same problem at Pasir Ris Street 11 (see picture below):

"With the recent hazy spell, this indiscriminate burning outside of the bins can create breathing problems for asthmatics like myself.

"They are burning the offerings on the ground and on the grass, despite unused bins just a few blocks away.

"I have reported this problem to my Town Council.

In consideration of the littering problem, I think that air pollution problem is a far greater issue for us nowadays. Keep burning and maybe we will feel the terror of extensive Global Warming. It's bad enough that we're near the equator... Have some bloody consideration.

While singaporeans should learn to tolerate each ethnic group's cultural practices, even the correct intentions coupled with the wrong methods has a negative overall result. So I hope the authorities can enforce the use of burning bins and penalize those who fail to use it.

No discrimination here. I have been smelling smoke lately. Sometimes, I wonder should the authority re-locate those bins to the side of the flat instead of putting them in front of the flat.
