What Bugs Me
How do we find our dog if security cameras don’t work and police officers don’t care?

STOMPer Lennie was appalled when he learnt that the security cameras in front of Killiney NTUC Fairprice, where his dog had gone missing, were not working. To make things worse, the supermarket staff and police did not seem to care when the STOMPer tried to make a report.

In an email to STOMP today (Feb 2), the STOMPer says:

“On Feb 1, at 3pm, my partner and I stopped at the NTUC Fairprice at Killiney Road. We tied our 4-year-old Jack Russell to the base of a small tree at the entrance of the supermarket.

“There was another small dog there as well. Our Charlie was in front of all the entry and exit points.

“About 8 minutes later, when we emerged from the supermarket, much to our horror, we found our dog missing. We reported it to the store manager and security personnel.

“On requesting to view video footage of the store, imagine our outrage to be told that none of the six cameras in the supermarket, including one at the Automated Teller Machine, (ATM) were not in operation.

“They are apparently too costly to engage. Should an incident such as a kidnap or a theft occur, is the store equipped to handle them?

“The store simply dismissed the incident with a verbal apology.

"The guard then proceeded to tell me that the ‘china workers’ would steal the dog either to sell or eat. Zsuzsi, my partner, fell to ground after hearing this, and this thought stayed with me till 4am this morning as I walked around building sites looking for Charlie.

“My nightmare continued at the Killiney Road Police Post, where I attempted to file a missing  animal report. I was not taken seriously by the officers who told me that they do not handle missing animal reports.

“Dognapping is as much a crime as kidnapping. It took me six visits to the police post before I could file a report with them.

“The complete disregard by the store staff and police over the theft of my dog has left me flabbergasted.

“As a foreigner who has lived in Singapore for 10 years and prided on it as a secure place to live and work in, I now beg to differ. Have we not learned from the entire Mas Selamat episode?   The attitude of the supermarket staff and the police seems to be, ‘It’s just a dog, why the fuss?’.

“My subsequent search of the area and conversations with shoppers at the supermarket reveal that my dog had been seen with a construction worker from China.

“Can the relevant authorities comment on why a supermarket like NTUC Fairprice would invest in installing security cameras but yet not operate them just to reduce cost and risk the security of its shoppers?"

In Singapore, the Police got better things to do,They know that there is nothing nothing except a official letter 2 months later to tell you they have exhausted all their resources and your dog is nowhere to be found. So why bother,If they actually expense manpower for your missing dog,how can they explain to the owner of the missing car/the victim of the snatch theft/the rape victim's/the murder that happen not two street away????
Low crime rates doesn't meant no crime rates.Be responsible for your own valuable.

hey.. this poor guy just lost a dog.. give him a break!
how would u feel if u lost something precious! put yourself in his shoes!!!!
as for the dog being tied to the tree, it's because many public places like shopping centres don't allow pets. he had no choice but to tie it to the tree.

You failed to take care of you pet properly by leaving it and tied it onto a tree. You caused unnecessary stress by it alone and restricted it movement. you don't qualify to own any pet. One thing for sure, with many eager hunters around, there are no chance of finding you pet as it probably be slaughtered and eaten as delicacy.

Dear Lennie. It seems that by now you would have already understood our intentions and our thoughts regarding your lost dog. Without a doubt, we are quite shaken and sad. Our prayers go to Charlie, and even though he may still be lost to you, we do hope that he's found a better owner. Cos Lennie... you're horrible at keeping pets. Next time tie a leash around Zsuzsi and tie him to a pole outside. He may not be Charlie, but hey, he's like family. Maybe this time the Police will actually take you seriously.

Dear Linnie, It is your dog and your are soley responsible. Don't be a typical Singaporean that blame everyone else but yourself. About security camera, it is not installed by MHA. It is for their own use and they have right to do anything they want, they do not owe you a living!!!

Police is not your security guard. If police have to go look for every missing dogs cases, how much tax payers money will go into it? Please hire your own maid...

@jeremytan83, yes I agree! those who have nothing better to say should just shut up. Some people like Jeremy only like to hear the good things. These people also refuse to acknowledge fault and dun like to hear criticism. Keep quiet and dun hurt them!

The stomper should think first before he act. Firstly which law in the world state that the CCTV must be in working order even when install. Some places install dummy camera to deter crime from happening. Also I am wondering what the police can do to help. Dog normmaly do not carry IC and did you even see policeman checking and talking to dogs...

@jeremytan83: Dude, you are not a cool headed guy.. cannot read the reality and biased! I believe AbolishNSAbolishNS talked about dogs, so how in earth you bring 'child' and relate it to his sentence?? And for your knowledge, most of the replies here did show sympathize for the lost dog.. but definitely not to the way STOMPER tried to drag others for the mistake STOMPER did him/herself? The only selfish person here is STOMPER him/herself?
