What Bugs Me
Only $1 from $5 X'mas hat goes to charity

STOMPer Kat is saddened to find out that only $1 from every $5 Christmas hat is going to charity. The remaining amount apparently goes to commission for the sales people and to cover other costs.

In the STOMPer's email:

"The cute little Christmas hats you see along orchard road is selling for $5.

"I wanted to purchase 5 for my family and also do good, but little did I know that only $1 out of $5 was given to the charity!

"The remaining amount goes to commission for the sales people, and god-knows-where.

"It saddens me that there are Singaporean companies that make use of people like that.

"I might have as well donated all $5 to an organization I want instead of paying $4 for a stupid hat and feeding the so-called 'volunteers'."

WAnna really donate, approach the organisation you wanna donate to face to face and donate....that should be the best way in order to prevent companies from using charities and charity shows as a reason to reap in huge profits.

I have bought pens saying part goes to charity too. I felt stupid after that, because it then occur to me that they are only using the word charity to mislead you. That sux and I'll never buy from them again.

But, as I walked down orchard road, I felt the festive mood created by the little hat! Obviously the organizer put in alot of effort in making that happen! I think this is the kind of organizer that I want to support! So what only $1 goes to charity. I am buying a good product and supporting local aunties! And damn, it is much better than the stupid pen I got...

I agree with OverRange. Other than the little hats, I also saw many foreign students from China selling those big Christmas hats. Obviously, they do not have any license to sell and definitely no charity involve whatsoever. Production are done in China and profits all goes to seller and organizers. And because they did not mentioned they give to charity, they are okay??

Come on, give it a thought. Workers that are helping charity shouldn't get paid for the time and effort they put in?? I think they should be paid fairly! Of course, I have seen people donating their time and effort for free and I sincerely salute them! But how many people and how many time get they do that? It is naive if you are thinking like that.

Project planning (time), recruiting (time), designing (time), production (time), material (money), storage (money), logistic (time), and other things like administration and etc.. that involve spending time of those people.
time = money. The hats are cute and add spice to the festive. Even if it is not for charity, people will still buy it. If you think it is stupid and not worth it and rather donate, $5 to charity, by all mean, just go to any charity organization and drop your $5.

serious i always wonder, do the companies which have donation boxes, include the cash donation as deductable in their company tax?

In short, they pay lower taxes because of the donation collected in the boxes. (like those at the cashiers in supermarkets)
