What Bugs Me
SMS competition hides $10 weekly subscription cost in fine print

Eagle-eyed STOMPer vanillaaijs spotted weekly charges totalling $320 hidden in the fine print on these flyers he received when buying local magazines.

Here's what the STOMPer wrote in an email today (Dec 3):

"I got these three identical 'winning cards' from 8 Days, I-Weekly and U Magazine.

"It says that the SMS to claim the promotion is charged at a standard rate.

"When you read through the fine print however, you will find that you are actually subscribed to a $10 per week service from TXT MOBI, and that the drawing date is June next year.

"This seems like a trick to get people to join and unknowingly pay $40 a month for these 'services' until next year, if you do not read the fine print carefully.

"This is very similar to the recent case in the news about a teenager who spent nearly $1700 to take part in an SMS competition.

"$40 x 8 = $320 if you are not aware of the cost."

There should be stricter rules on all these competition, all cost involved should be made know clearly in bigger prints. Also advertisements in newspaper like Quick cash, easy money hand phones sign up for cash in are so obvious is also a scam and should not be allowed.
