What Bugs Me
How dare Malaysia says it owns Hainanese chicken rice and other local dishes

It's outrageous that Malaysia has not only staked ownership of popular local dishes like Hainanese chicken rice and bak kut teh, but has also accused other countries -- implying Singapore -- of hijacking them, says a fuming STOMPer Brad Tan.

He was referring to comments by Malaysian Tourism Minister Ng Yen Yen that laksa, nasi lemak, Hainanese chicken rice, chilli crab and bak kut teh are all Malaysian dishes.

Not only this, she also accused other countries of "hijacking" the local dishes, declaring that it was high time that Malaysia claimed them as Malaysian.

'We cannot continue to let other countries hijack our food,' she said, without naming the countries.

'Chilli crab is Malaysian. Hainanese chicken rice is Malaysian. We have to lay claim to our food,' the minister said after she launched the Malaysia International Gourmet Festival.

Food critics disagreed with her contention. Even Malaysian celebrity chef Rohani Jelani said that food in general is not politically divided.

Brad Tan says that he is not surprised with such comments coming from Malaysian ministers as they do it all the time.

But they should stay clear of a passionate subject like food.

I think if any country have the right to claim ownership to chicken rice and bak kut teh, it should be China. Think about it... who brought them to this part of the world in the first place? Even laksa is half chinese! If i'm not wrong, laksa originated from the nonyas, and nonya is half chinese half malay. :P Well, maybe they can say nasi lemak is theirs. Chilli crabs? They only have it because singaporeans love it so much we always go JB and eat (cheaper mah). They should just promote penang laksa and klang bak kut teh which everybody more or less agrees they do it better. Best of all, already got their state name tagged to the dish.

malaysian govt can't even settle their own internal problems, why stir more shit with neighbouring countries? singapore never wanted to fight for ownership of these dishes, we just happen to do it better. don't like it? try harder then. at least tourists can have a plate of chicken rice in singapore knowing the hygiene standards are high and they're in a city with SIGNIFICANTLY lower crime rates. beat that.
