Vanessa Chia met Wong Chun Han when they volunteered as ushers at the 2007 Chingay Parade. One day, she was bored, so she told him to ask her out and they started from there.
Said Vanessa:
"Because I asked him to ask me out <3
"We first met during the 2007 Chingay Parade when we volunteered as ushers. We were in the same sector, sector 3.8. There was no chemistry, no sparks, yet. We started chatting on MSN and messaged each other a few months after the event. On a random day, I told him to ask me out because I was bored during the holiday. That was our very first meet up before he went into the army.
"Around the second half of the next year, we went out regularly on the weekends. It was just the two of us, since we did not have any mutual friends. We had a common interest; the Dance Dance Revolution game in the arcade. He would pinch my cheeks and play with my hair but I didn’t know he was interested in me; the girl whom he thinks was daring to request to be asked out.
"He started to notice me because I did that. Our relationship started on the last day of 2008 when he brought me to East Coast Park. I didn’t know what I was feeling for him but I decided to give this relationship a chance. Initially, it was hard on him because I wasn’t really into the relationship. However, I came to realise that this man is ever so forgiving no matter what I did and he never forces me to do the things I dislike. We were also quite alike in certain ways and often say the same things together. I started to feel confident about this relationship.
"However, things happened along the way. I was heartless. We broke up. He must have hated me. Yet, he chose not to give up on our 2.5 year relationship. He started to buy and wear new clothes to surprise me (given that he doesn’t shop for clothes at all). He spends more time than ever just talking to me, forsaking his games. He may be a gamer but he showed me that I’m always more important than his games. It was a pleasant change from the past. He tried his best to do everything that would please me.
"He planned for my birthday: he brought me to USS. We promised to go there together but he went beforehand to explore the place so he could make it a better experience for me. It was so cute when he took out the dinosaur bottle from his bag, the one he bought from USS the previous time so that drinks can be refilled at $2. He gave me the courage to take all the rides, in fact a few times on the huge roller coasters. It was also the first time we watched fireworks together.
"After that, he drove us to Mount Faber and there he gave me my birthday present. The first present was a glass bottle with 31 folded paper hearts in it and 31st was the day we got together. Then, there was another big box. I really didn’t know what to expect. When I opened it, I saw many folded paper hearts. In total, he made me 1111 hearts because he knows I always make a wish when the clock strikes 11:11. I didn’t know how to react and I think he was disappointed. I was very touched of course! It took him so much time and effort. How many guys out there ever did this?
"Even though we broke up in the middle, it felt like he never left me at all. He was there, for me all the time. I just didn’t realise until things went wrong. Through this, it came to me that I never really wanted to end this relationship. In fact, I couldn’t really live without him. Thankfully, things did not end just like this. It was like a new beginning and we learnt how to communicate better.
"I made a mistake and I will never repeat it a second time. I said my speech and with a paper ring, I asked him to be my boyfriend again. He said yes! And I want to marry this man.
"I love you Baby. Thank you for being my boyfriend! "
