When John Yap first got to know Doreen, he thought she loved to go drinking and clubbing. However, he really respected her when he found out she juggles two jobs while going for courses at two tertiary institutes.

Said John:

"My girlfriend, Doreen and I got to know each other during our course of study at Kaplan StarHub Campus.

"On July, 2010, I got to know her by knowing a friend of hers in our class. I didn't know at first, how to get near her or make a conversation. So I gave it a shot by getting to know her friend Jolyn first during our exam. And then Jolyn introduced us during the start of our next semester.

"At first, I didn't know what to talk about or anything. So I started by asking her what she does, and learnt that she was a student at Singapore Poly also other than Kaplan.

"I was astonished by how hardworking she was even though my first impression of her was the type that loved to go drinking, clubbing and is still playful. But after talking more with her during our lessons on weekdays made me see another side of her. So I withdrew my judgement on her and really respected her.

"She was working at Raffles Hotel part-time and giving private tuition to Primary and Secondary school students. I can only imagine how tough it was to work both sides and study at 2 institutions.

"Then we became closer and I learnt that she was attached. I lost hope and didn't want to get near her anymore since I'm afraid it would give rise to problems if her boyfriend didn't like it.

"Then one day, we got to sit on the train together and I acted normal and talked with her. Then finally I asked her for her number. I didn't know why but I asked.

"And so then we began texting more and more each day till CNY'2011. She asked me out to grab a drink with her friend. So I went and then at the end of the day, found out she and her boyfriend was having difficulties.

"She broke up with him eventually and then, on the night of 10th Feb 2011, I sent her home after catching a movie at Plaza Singapura.

"During the trip, I told her, 'If you need someone to talk to or hang out, you can always look for me, and if its okay, I would like to be your boyfriend someday.'

"And that someday was that day, she told me yes she'd let me be her boyfriend. And until now we are still together and nearing our anniversary.

"I would always want to tell her, I love you. Even though we had lots of obstacles on the road and in the future."
