Ugly Commuters
Discourteous and selfish attitude on the MRT shocks disappointed tourists

It is a shame that Singapore is becoming an increasingly ungracious society, says a tourist from Scotland, who observed that young people here fail to give up their seats to the elderly in the MRT.

The visitor, who was in town recently, noticed that this selfish attitude is a recent trend which did not exist many years ago.

It is sad to see the younger generation of Singaporeans disregard the elderly and those who are more needy, he says.

In an email, STOMPer Sad Scottish visitor says:

"My wife and I travel on the MRT when visiting your city and we have done so for many years.

"However, we have noticed that the youth of today are not so respective of their elders as those in the past were.

"They no longer pay attention to the signs asking them to consider disadvantaged passengers and will not give up their seats at any cost.

"Both visitors and locals are treated with the same disregard.

"Singapore was once a great place to visit but now it has come to the same level as most large cities around the world.

"Such a shame!

"Maybe this situation can be reversed but I fear not with the present generation."

kudos to crapssman and icy_summer! Aren't youths human too? why always blame the youths for not giving up the seats? Why the so-called mature adults can't do so? Only a rare few adults will give up their seats to elderly. So what are the rest doing? Either pretending to sleep or reading newspaper. You guys complain that the youths always pretend to sleep. This is most probably because the youths are learning from those insensitive adults first, that's why some youths actually followed suit and think that it's ok! haiz. poor youths who always gets blamed for everything.

gemzyG82 said:surely u will also be pissed off seeing ur wife with a huge tummy standing while others just dont bother... Everybody has their fair share toward cultivating the next generation and it starts with you.it will be lovely to have someone else offer a seat to ur pregnant wife but hence the mian responsibility still lies with you as her hubby being the main culprit for blowing up her tummy???? Sounds crude???Well wake up and smell the morning air of reality.

But I do thank you for being decent enough not to take photos of such people and putting it on stomp unlike other immature people with no life and an irrational anger towards youths sitting on MRTs who are minding their own business do.

To stomper Sad Scottish Visitor and others out there who share the same sentiments, It is quite unfair of you to stereotype youths in Singapore today. Indeed it is true that there may be those who may lack incentive in giving up seats, but there are many others who do so graciously and neither get praised or recognised for their actions. You may have seen many teens not giving up their seats, but i have seen many ungracious adults snatching seats when there are people who need the seats more as well. Ever alighted from the MRT? Many times? What do you see the first thing the door opens? Yes, countless of older Singaporean adults staring back at you waiting for you to somehow "give way" for them. Don't believe me? Take note of it the next time you do so. In fact, come to think of it, thats how alot of teens learn to be inconsiderate..from the very inconsiderate minority of old adults who only seem to care about themselves.
