Top Mum Awards: I was so afraid I'd lose her in heart operation

STOMPer Muhamad Faris was so scared he would never see his mother again after she went through a heart bypass operation to treat her heart problem. He would pray every day to ask God to make sure that nothing would happen to mother.

The STOMPer tells us more about why he loves his mother:

"There was a time when my mother was very ill. She had a heart problem and was admitted to the hospital to go through a heart bypass operation. I was very sad and scared that I would not see her again after her operation. Every day I prayed to God, hoping that nothing would happen to her.

"During that period, I felt really lonely when I slept at night because she used to accompany me to sleep. I was only nine years old then. She would sit down beside me to read me a bedtime story even though I was a big boy already. That is why I really missed her then. She was admitted in the hospital for more than one week.

"My mother is very caring and funny. She never fails to be always there for me and I really appreciate her a lot for that.  She is very special to me. In my opinion she is the best person in the world, and I love her very much. I know she feels the same for me.

"She always has a bright, shining face that makes me happy. Those are just some of the reasons why I love her.

"She’s very loving because she takes care of me and brings me to the doctor when I am sick.

"She also give suggestions to my dad to bring us out to dinner during special occasions or just to have fun outside. Of course she is mindful that everything is within our budget.

"When I come back from school, she will always ask how my day was. She will also share her opinions when I am feeling down. She always shows her loving care for me and I always care for her too. I love her so much and I want her to know that!

"My mother is very funny! She always tells me funny jokes. She also always bursts into laughter when there is a funny part in a movie that we are watching together. I love watching her laugh.  She is also funny when she gets irritated, I will always crawl up to her and tickle her to make her laugh out loud.

"She is very intelligent and always helps me with my homework. She will guide me and correct my mistakes. I’m weak in math but she has helped me improve. In her school days, she usually got A’s and B’s in her maths.

"My mother is a good cook too. She can cook a lot of Malay, Indian and even Chinese dishes. The reason for this is her heritage. She is actually half Indian and half Chinese. She married my dad who is Malay. Her ancestors are from India and China but she is a Singaporean because she was born here in Singapore.

"She was raised here in Singapore and knows nothing of her ancestor’s homeland. She once mentioned she would definitely go if given the chance to visit her ancestor’s homeland.

"Our family is not well off hence going for holidays to those places might not be within my dad’s budget. I feel sad for her therefore my goal is to study hard and try to achieve her dreams.

"If you see her or talk to her, you might think that she is Malay because she looks like one and speaks Malay. Since her roots are Indian and Chinese, she can speak these languages too. Although she might not speak Tamil very well, she can understand whatever you say.

"Hokkien is her first language as my grandmother (her mother) spoke to her in that dialect since she was young. She can also speak a little bit of Mandarin as she enjoys watching Mandarin dramas on television.

"When she speaks to my auntie (her sister) on the phone, I always wonder what she is saying to my auntie as my whole family don’t speak or understand the language. I really envy her because of that.

"Even though she nags a lot, especially when I do not do my homework or when I am lazy, I know that she does that because she cares and loves me. There have been many times when I have quarrelled with her but at the end of the day, I always apologise as I know that she loves me.

"She is very friendly to neighbours and her friends. She is also a person whom we can easily speak to. I always confide in her when I am down having problem with friends. She never fails to give me good advice on how not to jeopardise the friendship.

"Now she is well from her heart problem. I am glad that things have turned out well for her. Even though the doctor had adviced her not to do vigorous work, she is doing well.

"My mother is one of the best people in the world and I will love her forever and so will my family! She is so loving, funny, intelligent and creative! Those are the reasons why my mother is special! I always pray to God hoping that we stay healthy for years to come.

"‘I love you mother’."
