Despite her constant struggles in her studies, Hui Ling's mother never gave up her but encourages and give her moral support.

"When I was four months old, my mum sacrificed and quit her full-time job to take care of me, because I had a very high fever and need to be warded under observation. Another reason was also because my grandmother contracted cataract. She needed to go for an operation and was unable to look after me for the time being. My mum stayed at the hospital to take care of me until I recovered and can be discharged from the hospital. She had to manage looking after me and my grandmother as well as doing all the household chores all on her own.
"She always shows love, care and concern for me. When I was bullied by my schoolmates in primary school, she stood up for me and fetched me to and fro from school. She also worried whether I had enough pocket money to spend. When I needed to stay back in school for my remedial lessons, she would refill my water bottle and buy me lunch. During the examination period, she would give her full moral support to me. When I was sitting for my Primary School Leaving Examination, she would specially take good care of me by giving me everything I need. She is always there to encourage me to excel in my examinations.
"When I was selected to go into the Normal Technical Stream for my secondary school, my mum did not reprimand me as she knew I have been always weak in my studies, especially mathematics. She encouraged me to work hard and hired tutors to coach me for my Mathematics. My mum spent so much time and money just to hire a tutor to coach me for the subject that I am weak in. I did not give up but continued my tuition until my ‘Normal’ Level. Although I did not do well in my Mathematics for ‘Normal’ Level, my mum did not scold me, but encouraged me.
"After I graduated from my ‘Normal’ Level, I went to further my studies at Institute of Technical Education (ITE) in “Nitec In Service Skills (Office)”. At ITE, my mum would worry that I might mix with bad company. She would always call my mobile phone to check where am I and why I am still not back from school.
"At times, I felt that I do not have the freedom to go out with my friends. After graduating from my Nitec course, I went for Higher Nitec In Business Administration. I studied extremely hard and applied for a polytechnic course. However, there was too much competition and I was unable to get enrolled in the institute of my choice. I felt so devastated that I have let my mum down. On the contrary, my mum did not give up on me and encouraged me to go for private diploma to further my studies.
"As education is important to one’s career, I went to apply for a private diploma at the Management Development Institute of Singapore. After eight months of studies, I graduated with a diploma In International Business. Armed with a diploma and ready for a career, I started to apply for full time jobs. I attended quite a number of interviews but they were unsuccessful due to my lack of working experience. Despite going through unsuccessful interviews, my mum gave me moral support and advised me not to give up as well as encouraged me to take my time and not to feel pressurised. I started to work part-time jobs to gain working experience.
"Even though I am working now, my mum is still constantly worrying for me about things like whether I have reached my office safely or if I have encountered any problems with my work.
"She will also find time to have a chat with me every evening, to know my thoughts and plans for my future.
"To me, she is the best mum in the world. I am very fortunate and blessed to have such a wonderful mother.
" 'Love, Caring, Concern'.
"It doesn’t matter if my mum wins Top Mum Awards or not, all that matters is that she is happy.
"This special year of 2012, I hope my mother can have the happiest and most memorable mother’s day celebration. My birthday falls on 13th of May and I will be spending my birthday together with my mum to celebrate Mother’s Day together. Mum, you rock! Thank you for always taking care of me! I love you."
