An Australian tourist came across a restaurant in Panyu district, Guangdong, which was apparently selling a caged live koala for 139 Yuan (SGD$27.65) per 500 grams and available “braised or stewed.” However, it is unclear whether this is just another sales gimmick.
According to an online news report, the selling price of the animal has cast doubt on whether the animal was actually a koala. Some have suggested that this 'koala' might actually be a variety of 'tree bear'.
However, the Australian tourist remained convinced that it was indeed a koala, and was shocked by the idea of consuming one of his country's iconic animals.
The restaurant in question reportedly had other live exotic animals on offer to diners, including birds and fish.
STOMPer bearboy, who came across this article online, wrote:
"I am really quite shocked.
"It's terrible if this is true.
"From the photo, the animal looks more like a wombat than a koala bear but either way, this is disgusting.
"Let's hope this is really just a hoax and not actually happening."
