All that STOMPer Antonio Vargas wanted to do was to take a break by watching a good movie during the Chinese New Year period.
But what he didn't count on was Cathay Organisation making the experience so "suay" (unlucky) by screening the short story, Ah Ma, before the actual movie "The Monk" started
The movie, which was given special mention at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007, is about a grandfather lying in the hospital, her life hanging by a thread. Ah Ma’s family gathers by her deathbed to send her off. Overwhelmed by sadness, they struggle to find their own way of coming to terms with the impending end. Ah Mah dies in the end.
Says Antoni: "So what if the film was given special mention at Cannes. Why so insensitive by showing such a suay movie during the CNY period? The entire movie was centered on the death of the grandmother. During CNY, we should not be seeing images of death.
"And why show a short film from 2007? What's the rational in doing this?"
He said that other people were also squirming in their seats. "Cathay owes us all an apology," he adds.
