Spookily cool: This guy paints using smoke

We have all heard of people who create paintings out of sand, acrylic paints or even water colours, but how about something so hard to even grasp, like smoke? See how this artist does it, in photos sent in by STOMPer SmokeGetsInYourEyes.

Said the STOMPer:

"This guy, Rob Tarbell, knows how to paint with...smoke.

"He does it by controlling the flow of smoke and he burns everyday objects under a paper canvas fixed on the ceiling of his studio.

"He first started his craft in 2007 -- and it seemed, much akin to taming a wild animal like in a circus. Hence his circus-themed paintings.

"His work is ethereal and ghostly, much befitting of his style of painting.

"The artist even said on his website, 'The performing animal images in the Smokes parallel the drawing process. The trainer must recognise and respect the innate nature of an animal when trying to modify its behavior to achieve a desired outcome: e.g. training a bear to dance or training a horse to walk upright. The same is true in working with smoke. The inherent properties of smoke must be respected, then permitted to – and yet discouraged from – acting naturally.'

"Some of the things he burns to create his stream of smoke are photos, credit cards and so on. Of course he does this while decked in a fireproof suit, with a carbon filter unit and a fresh air system with a full facial mask.

"Maybe we could harness this craft when our neighbours burn too much joss paper...?"
