Thanh Hoa Province Police officers said that they have resumed the practice of using fishing nets to catch illegal motorbike race participants and motorists who are speeding during the Chinese New Year period.
According to news report by Tuoitrenews, police officers will throw fishing nets at the rear wheels of motorbikes if the riders are speeding or disobeying traffic rules.
The authorities also claim that contrary to popular belief, this method is not dangerous to the rider or pedestrians nearby.
They say that the motorbike will be forced to a gradual halt because the net will get tangled in the rear wheel..
Usage of fishing nets by the police began on the 28th of October, 2011 and the practice has yet to cause death or serious injuries to motorists or pedestrians.
Initial public opinion of this method was negative, as most thought the high travelling speeds of the motorists would make the fall caused by the fishing nets dangerous.
The police chief of Thanh Hoa, Colonel Le Van Nghiem, has mentioned that the common misconception that the nets were cast on the heads of speeding motorists lead to the belief that this method endangered their lives.
And that was the reason why the majority of the public had a negative opinion of this practice.
This method will not be used on motorists who commit normal traffic violations.
Only motorists who take part in illegal races, commit speeding offences or maintain poor lane discipline will be subject to having fishing nets thrown at their rear wheel.
Such motorists will be warned by traffic police to pullover, and failure to comply would warrant the usage of fishing nets on the rear wheel of the motorbike.
The Ministry of Public Security also issued a statement that there were 129 traffic accidents over a three day period that left 106 people dead and 110 others injured.
In comparison to the previous year, there were 13 less fatalities, and the number of injury cases also went down by 32.
