Palanquin procession at Thaipusam: A legacy to leave our younger generations with

STOMPers Jay and Devi hope that youths from all walks of life will come forward and to continue the palanquin-carrying procession at Thaipusam as it could provide them with enlightment in life.

In a jointly-submitted contribution, the STOMPers wrote:

“This is our third year of carrying a palanquin for Thaipusam -- probably the only palanquin-carrying procession this year.

“There may be no greater legacy to leave for future generations than to connect youngsters and children with Thaipusam as it can guide them towards the proper teaching of their religion.

“The reason why we carry a palanquin during Thaipusam is to offer more people a chance to attain a sense of fulfilment in their lives.

“Processions such as fire-walking, kavadi dance as well as palanquin carrying are carried out to seek help from the gods and show sincerity in your request for help.

“I would really like this to be published so that the youngsters and children can be educated and enlightened about Thaipusam.

“Every year at Thaipusam, each one of us, from over 20 families, will help with some important elements of worship such as meditation, fasting and prayers.

“Youngsters are turning to spirituality in ever-growing numbers and we would like to encourage more youngsters towards a positive path in their lives.

“We are organised and uniformed as one family during Thaipusam.

“Youngsters are led by senior brothers to be disciplined and taught the right path not only during Thaipusam but also, everyday.

“For Thaipusam every year, our young devotees provide practical support, such as fixing and decorating the palanquin in unity, before and during the service.

“All the different brothers of different families unite as one on Thaipusam. Even members of other religions such as Muslims and Christians follow and unite with us in this palanquin procession as a family.

“There are students from primary schools, secondary schools and junior college, as well as ladies of all ages who take part in the carrying of the palanquin which is very rare in Thaipusam.

“Every one of these roles adds depth to our individual's experience of worship as well as bringing them closer to others in each family.

“There is a great deal of support for one another lovingly and prayerfully on a daily basis during this Thaipusam.

“Thaipusam is a great way to foster meaningful experiences for the entire family.

“We hope future generations will take this as an example to continue and/or follow a disciplined, organized and devoted procession in their way."
