S'porean kid who called CNY a 'rip-off' says it was an 'intelligent joke'

The 14-year-old teenager who drew flak from netizens for mocking Chinese New Year as a 'senseless' rehash of New Year's Day in a video says it was meant to be satirical and an 'intelligent joke'.

The video was made by Zhonghua Secondary School student Amos Yee, who also stars in Jack Neo's latest movie, We Not Naughty. He had previously won Best Actor and Best Short Film in the FiRST Film Fest, organised by The New Paper.

When contacted, Amos told My Paper that the video was meant to be satirical and was not meant to insult anyone. It was meant to be an intelligent joke, said the secondary two student.

Amos also told The New Paper:

"To all the haters, I am open to their criticism, I'm not a racist as some people have called me. I love feedback. I feel, humbly, that feedback is good.

"The video is a joke executed well, but it attracted a lot of (unnecessary) hate.

"Most of the people are commenting for the sake of commenting. They are also commenting from other people's comments. Have they seriously looked at the video from their own perspective?

"I am Amos Yee. I don't care what people think. They can hate me for all they want. It shows that people are interested in me."

Amos' mother also said her son's video clip was done in good fun. He had uploaded it with the intent of it being a 'comical greeting card'. She says Amos is a good boy in real life and enjoys all the traditions and customs of Chinese New Year and loves going visiting.

Jack Neo also defended Amos, saying he is not to be blamed as generally, "most children these days have no idea of the origins of Chinese New Year."

STOMPer FamousAmos who read the report shared her opinion:

"First you insult until so jialat, then you come out and say it was a smart joke.

"If you want to make smart jokes in your 'American accent' about your very own culture, then you can jolly well stop celebrating CNY and go elsewhere.

"You are still quite young, but not too young to not understand the fundamentals of respect. Next time think properly before you speak."

@mongmongghiak, In what way was it a so called intelligent joke? I don't seem to be able to find a single sense of humor inside it honestly. If i would have made this video my mum would probably slap me in the face because Chinese New Year is about traditions and all that. We are Asians and we are more conservative as we are raised that way therefore, saying that we are constipated is just downright stupid. Lastly, in Singapore you don't call it the filming industry because the shows are total crap here.
PS: I don't really like CNY myself but i won't make such a retarded video like him.

Dear Amos Yee,

I'm in the filming industry too, and I find that you are incredibly talented. What you have done in your video was misconstrued by many simply because our society simply isn't that Globalized yet - in mentality that is.
So, I am so sorry, Singapore is NOT a place where you can throw an Intelligent Joke around because most people are just by and large "constipated".

Hope that you've learnt some things are not meant to be joked.

jeez.
all these teenagers, adults & older adults are hating on a little 14 year old who is just having fun, trying to be funny.

Get a life, Be mature about it. As long as you enjoy CNY yourself just ignore other people's viewpoint.

Of course. Nobody at age 14 would give a damn what the world thinks. Try that again 10 years later. Kid.
