Is this Venus? Bright 'planet-like' object seen in evening sky

STOMPer Vignes has been capturing images of a celestial object, which he believes is the planet Venus, in the evening sky over the past few days.

Said the STOMPer:

"Over the past few days in the evening, before the sun sets, a celestial object is spotted in the sky.

"These photos were captured using a conventional DSLR camera Nikon P500.

"The photos were taken from a flat at Woodlands.

"This 'evening star' I think is the planet Venus. The object is the brightest in the night sky after the Moon, but people may mistake it for a star.

"The pictures of the moon was also taken today (Jan 7, 2011 at around the same time). Tomorrow (Jan 8, 2011) will be the full moon.

"STOMPERs may wish to see the full moon and the 'evening star' which is westwards from the Moon."

Venus -- based on its whitish colour & relatively low position in the sky. This planet "follows the sun" -- ie. it is always observed in the western sky just after sunset, & in the eastern sky before sunrise. You will never find Venus right overhead in the middle of the night, 'cos the planet is located between Earth & Sun.

And if you have a large telescope, you can discern the changing phases of Venus (ie. just like the Moon).

The next brightest naked-eye planetary objects in the nightsky would be Jupiter (whitish), Saturn (whitish) & Mars (reddish). You can see these at any time of the night, as long as their orbital positions align them in the line-of-sight with the night-side of Earth.

Venus can be seen every evening on sunset. Fine the sun, then look for Venus which is from the bottom right direction of the sun. Or was it left. Can't remember.

yes i can confirm that especially when the sky darkens. It's not moon, moon doesnt shines as brightly as a star. even a 3 yr old kid will know it's not a moon. It's like a huge piece of diamond shinning brightly.
