Woman in her 50s arrested for attempted suicide at Kallang Riverside Park

A Chinese woman, believed to be in her 50s was arrested by the police for attempted suicide at Kallang Riverside Park earlier today (Jan 2), A STOMPer, who was on the other side of the river, had sent in photos of the incident.

A spokesperson from the Singapore Police Force wrote:

"Police received a call today (Jan 2) at about 5.30pm, informing us about a person seen in the waters of the river near the junction of Kallang Riverside and Kallang Road.

"A Chinese woman, believed to be in her 50s, was subsequently brought to safety by police officers.

"She was conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital and subsequently placed under arrest for attempted suicide.

"The police are currently carrying out investigations."

It is proper to arrest them first so they cannot make an escape. Counselling can come after that. But counselling does not guarantee change in that person.

People shouldn't be arrested for attempted suicide. They should be helped with counselling and treatment. If people are already depressed, arresting them is only going to make them feel worse and that would likely lead to another attempt at suicide. Another example of how unnecessarily draconian Singapore laws are.
