Flood waters reach 30cm in some parts of S'pore, subsides within 1 hour: PUB

Due to prolonged heavy rain in the afternoon, many parts of Singapore were hit by flash floods, with flood waters in some areas reaching 30 cm. The flood waters generally subsided within an hour.

Said the PUB in a statement (Dec 23):

"Prolonged heavy rain fell over the southern and central parts of Singapore this afternoon. From 2.20pm to 5.20pm, the total recorded rainfall was 152.8mm at Orchard Road.

"Flash floods occurred at Cuscaden Road, Newton Circus, Kampong Java, Lincoln Road, Wee Nam Road, Cambridge Road, junction of Moulmein Road and Thomson Road in front of United Square, and junction of Bukit Timah junction and Sixth Avenue. Motorists were advised to avoid these areas.

"Flood waters reached up to a height of 30 cm for some areas and generally subsided within 1 hour, except at Cambridge Road, Newton Circus and junction of Moulmein Road and Thomson Road in front of United Square where waters subsided by 6pm. The affected areas are mainly low-lying areas.

"There was no flooding at Orchard Road. However, water ponded at the open area of Liat Towers, the underpass between Lucky Plaza and Ngee Ann City, and the basement of Lucky Plaza due to the sustained heavy downpour.

"Rochor Canal is currently being upgraded to improve the drainage system serving Cambridge Road, Newton Circus and junction of Moulmein Road and Thomson Road in front of United Square. The works commenced in Oct 2011 and are expected to be completed in Jan 2014. The Bukit Timah Canal between Wilby Road to Maple Road is being widened and works will be completed by Dec 2012. The drains at Wee Nam Road will also be expanded by 2013.

"Up to 8 gates at Marina Barrage were opened to maintain the water level at Marina Reservoir within the normal range.

"PUB officers and Traffic police were on site to render assistance.

"PUB advises the public to exercise caution as flash floods may occur in the event of heavy storms. The public can also call the PUB 24-hour Call Centre at 1800-284 6600 or go to PUB’s Facebook www.facebook.com/PUBSg or PUB iphone apps iPUBOne to report flash floods or to check on the flood situation. @khyeloco, agree w u on need for defence. However, just like the enemy, floods r unpredictable n hence all possibilities shud be anticipated. Recent floods shud no longer be claimed as "unpredictable"...they hv happened once too often. I dare suggest it's policymakers miscalculation, even to point of complacency n misguidance. Irony is military defence is compromised if soldiers cannot reach their AP. Economic, social n psychological defence cannot be compromised as well. The all convenient attitude of brushing things aside as "unpredictable" or "wear n tear" or "other countries r worse" is simply not acceptable.
