Volunteers given expired food at marathon, but event official says it's OK

STOMPer SCMS2011 was upset when she and her friends were served food that had apparently expired at the Standard Chartered Marathon this morning (Dec 4).

Said the STOMPer:

"We went to volunteer at the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore 2011 and got this food pack at 1.30am today, when the sticker on the container clearly stated that the food had expired an hour before that, at 12.30am.

"They distribute expired food with hair in them and expect us to eat them!

"My classmates and I dare not take the risk because we don't want to suffer from food poisoning.

"There have been news about food poisoning on TV and newspapers nowadays and yet they still don't take it seriously!

"Are they going to wait till people are admitted to hospital before they take serious actions with regard to expired and unhygienic food?

"When my classmates asked the leader, who was wearing a Standard Chartered shirt, he said it was OK. Just sit on the floor and eat. Horrible. This us just horrible!"

STOMP also received another complaint from STOMPer James, whose daughter participated in the marathon:

"On behalf of my daughter, I'm writing in regarding a very disappointed experience she experienced in this year Standard Chartered Marathon 2011.

"She reached the bag deposit point at around 5.45am and queued for 90 minutes, only to know they had just closed the bag deposit point.

"They were then telling people that the starting point will be closing soon as they will be 're-opening' the road thus all runners who still wanted to carry on for the run had to 'run quickly' to the starting point before they closed it.

"With her heavy bag, my daughter had to run all the way to the starting point and carry on her 21 km challenge.

"Upon reaching 11km, she was told to board the bus as she was too slow but that was because she had wasted 90 minutes at the bag deposit point.

"They said they would ferry her to the finishing point and she would still get her medal but that isn't what she signed up for?

"I certainly do not understand what the management has been doing, especially since it's such a large-scale event. I am really very disappointed with this issue."

The printed time is just a precaution. the food usually expires a few hours after the stated expiry time for precautionary purposes.

What I heard from medical reports is that our immune system strengthens itself through attacks from viruses and external bacteria. So if you don't get exposed to any form of viruses or bacteria (i.e. people who are so darn clean and afriad of touching this and that and using their hands), your immune system will not be stronger than the others.

Even if you eat it an hour after the 'expiration date/time' doesn't mean you will definetely get food poisoning or will join Steve Jobs! Come on lah...Volunteer?? You expected to be treated to a warm nice alacart buffet. Please lah, appreciate what you 've been given. The expiry time/date i only a guide! Wake up to the real world! This kind of stuff also Stomp, make my feet laugh.

The main issue here is not about the food being expired. Its just how the organizers treat those people who volunteered their time (which they could spend in doing something else) & energy helping out in a marathon to make it a success. I dont have any relation with the Stomper nor the marathon, just an opinion from the public.

tis is juz NEA guideline for food to be consumed within 4hours after its being prepared,

To some ignorant stompers out thr, tis is organised by singapore sports council, standard chartered bank is only the title sponsor.
