Maressa Zahirah, 23, may be of Pakistani-Portuguese and Malay descent, but that did not hold her back from joining a K-pop contest -- and winning it.
Not only was she one of the oldest participants in a contest for an industry that grooms talents from young, but she also "heard rumours" of non-Chinese contestants being disadvantaged at K-pop competitions. However, she "tried to look past" the negative buzz, the winner told The New Paper.
She joins fellow winner Jasmine Tan, 16, as one of the top two from Singapore in the regional search for talent in the tvN K-Pop Star Hunt. They will fly off to South Korea after Jasmine sits for her O-levels, to be groomed into K-pop stars by artiste management company CUBE Entertainment, who has churned out BEAST, 4 Minute and G-NA.
From a pool of 500 video submissions, 100 were chosen to perform in the first round held on Oct 22 at StarHub Green. From the top 20, Maressa and Jasmine emerged triumphant on Oct 23. Eight other winners from Hong Kong, Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand will also be joining them in South Korea.
For Maressa and Jasmine, it is not only a chance to meet their K-pop idols in South Korea, but it is also their big break. They will star in a reality series with the other winners, where they will compete for a K-pop artiste contract with CUBE.

For boys group, take "Big Bang" & "Super Junior" for example. Or Beast and MBLAQ and alot more. Their style is not acting cute.
Why target KPOP just because it's popularity is growing? in CPOP EPOP whatever there are also groups that "act cute". Why only target KPOP?
