STOMPer Ben wonders if Greece's recent economic woes have made the country a dangerous place to visit, referring to the case of Mr Kouk Leong Jin, a Singaporean medical student who has been missing there for the past nine days.
Mr Kouk, 28, a fourth-year student at the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, has been uncontactable since Sept 27, the day after he landed in Athens. He had travelled there to attend a medical conference.
His wife, 28-year-old teacher Seow Shu Ping, made a public appeal on Greek television for information on Monday after he failed to reply to messages and emails for seven days.
In his last message to his wife, he had indicated his intention to visit some of Greece's smaller islands. He has not been heard from since.
STOMPer Ben wrote:
"Greece's economy has taken a turn for the worse recently, with their unemployment levels at a record high.
"Perhaps Singaporeans should reconsider their plans to visit, as the country may not be at its safest right now.
"There are fears that Mr Kouk's disappearance might be a case of kidnapping, but it is much too early to tell. I for one hope this is not the case.
"My deepest sympathies go out to Mr Kouk's wife. I hope he is found soon."
