Singaporeans, be warned: The sight of beggars might tug at your heartstrings and compel you to part with your money, but be careful, for some of them, especially foreign nationals, may be taking advantage of your generosity, said STOMPer Griff.
According to a report in the New Paper, Nee Soon GRC Member of Parliament (MP) Lee Bee Wah think that some beggars may be taking advantage of generous Singaporeans.
The MP says she will not hesitate to take action when she sees them, especially in her GRC.
Ms Lee recounts how she alerted the police when she saw a female beggar at Yishun. Ms Lee thought the beggar looked suspicious, and indeed, it turns out she was actually a Chinese national on a social visit pass.
Some of Ms Lee's residents believe that these beggars are part of an overseas syndicate, and that the beggars only get a portion of the takings, with the rest going to the syndicate. Begging is illegal in Singapore.
STOMPer Griff says:
"Ms Lee Bee Wah's comments made me think twice about parting with my money.
"Singaporeans might have some negative traits, such as being kiasu, but most of them are kind hearted and will donate generously.
"It's heartwarming to know that Singaporeans are such a generous lot, but they should also be aware that there are people out there who can take advantage of this generosity."
