Where does thick smoke at Pioneer Rd come from? I can't see anything up ahead

STOMPer KP Lan had trouble driving along Pioneer Road North this morning as the road was covered with thick smoke. The STOMPer wonders where the smoke was coming from.

Said the STOMPer:

"At about 8.45am (Sep 16), as I was driving along Pioneer Rd North, the road ahead was filled with smokes so thick that I can't see what is ahead.

"I went ahead to investigate and at the same time, I made a call to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF)."

A statement from SCDF wrote:

"At 9.05am, SCDF was alerted to a fire at No.23 Neythal Road.

"SCDF resources were immediately dispatched to the location and arrived at the incident site within eight minutes.

"Upon arrival, SCDF personnel found the fire raging and thick black smoke emitting from the premises. SCDF personnel immediately donned breathing apparatus sets and conducted offensive fire fighting. A total of 3 water jets were used to extinguish the fire within 15 minutes.

"The fire involved barrels of paint measuring 10m by 10m.

"SCDF also conducted search operations to ensure that no one was trapped.

"The cause of the fire is being investigated.

"A man sustained minor burns and was conveyed to Singapore General Hospital (SGH) by an SCDF ambulance."

@ pyjstein & warforge: I am thinking exactly as what warforge mentioned. SGH do have good facilities and specialised burn units. Not too sure about NUH facilities, though I am sure they have one.

We have all the shipyards, chemical and heavy industries all at the west and south west.....rushing a casualty to the nearest hospital is indeed an ultimate challenge during peak hours. Even Heli-evacuation will take about 20-30mins to activate...

They always send casualties with burns to SGH because only SGH have a specialise dedicated burns centre.

@ whatamIdoinghere: "NUH or SGH is half-way across the island!"

Well, the "westerners" would have to wait for JGH (renamed Ng Teng Fong General Hospital) at Jurong East Central to open. Even so, I wonder how emergency vehicles arriving from Jln Ahmad Ibrahim & AYE are going to reach JGH during peak hours, because these 2 expressways are always choked at such periods.

Likewise, the SCDF sent the burnt casualty to SGH (instead of the substantially-nearer NUH) during the morning peak hour, perhaps 'cos of the jammed up AYE & the additional choke-point at the ONLY exit to NUH (via North Buona Vista). Similarly, West Coast Rd/Highway is jammed up at peak hours 'cos of the idiotic roundabout at Jln Buroh junction. As such, there is literally no way to get from western S'pore to NUH quickly, unless one goes by helicopter.

See that? Fire in Pioneer and the nearest hospital with critical emergency facilities, NUH or SGH is half-way across the island!
