Getai artiste Wang Lei was reportedly slapped by a guest at a wedding banquet in Yishun after he joked that an abalone gift he received was 'mouldy'.
'I recently opened the can of abalone I received three years ago from the owners, but it was already mouldy', Wang Lei joked.
The audience roared with laughter, but a man was unhappy with the jibe and dashed onto stage to slap the 50-year-old performer, in front of almost a thousand guests.
According to a news report in Lianhe Wanbao (Aug 3), the guest had been drinking. The matter was apparently settled amicably after the event.
STOMPer Tee commented on the incident:
"I have been following the getai artistes and was shocked to see this in the papers.
"At first I thought Wang Lei had insulted the very people whose wedding banquet he was attending, but upon reading the report, it was just a mild joke taken out of context and the man overreacted.
"Like the report said, the man may have been drinking. But very 'malu' leh, to have this happen at a joyous occasion like a wedding dinner."
