'Shin' noodles are safe: AVA

The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) has issued a reply to the recent instant noodles scare, where excessive amounts of a cancer-causing plasticizer were found in two brands.

According to a report in today's Straits Times (June 14), the plasticizer was found in Korean brand Nong Shim's Shin Ramyun and Shin Ramen, and Japan's Nissin noodles. The affected noodles were found in Hong Kong, and were made in China.

STOMPers were worried that 'Shin' noodles were still being sold here, even though the product has been pulled from shelves in Malaysia

AVA has reported that instant noodles here are safe for consumption. Singapore has not imported any Nissin instant noodles from China this year, and those sold here are made here or in Indonesia.

A spokesperson from AVA says:

"AVA has taken samples of Nong Shim instant noodles available on the local market for testing. No contamination has been detected in the noodles or seasoning.

"AVA will continue to monitor the situation closely."

STOMPer happynoodlegirl was relieved at the news:

"I was glad to hear that Nong Shim's Shin Ramen sold here is safe to eat after all.

"I love Shin Ramen, because the soup is so tasty and the noodles have a nice springy texture.

"I think I might suffer from Shin Ramen withdrawal if I had to stop eating it!

"It's still worrying though, that there are noodles from the same brand that contain a plasticizer; makes me wonder what goes into some of the food we consume."
