STOMPer Serene was stunned when she heard Samantha, a Holland Village resident, dismissing heartlanders as 'uncultured' on a radio show.
In a call-in segment on the Radio 91.3's morning show 'The Married Men', Samantha told DJ Rod Monteiro:
"Oh gosh, I live in Holland Village and I just can't understand why people from the heartlands want to come here because we people are cultured, and you heartlanders, are definitely not cultured..."
"They dress like one kind, talk like one kind. Like uncultured, and no manners..."
"We don't dress like them. We're more high class..."
"When you come to Holland, behave like us, like cultured people..."
"Do you even earn enough to come to Holland?"
"Please stay where you are, I think you fit best there."
STOMPer Serene wrote:
"I would like to draw your attention to this radio conversation.
"This girl is talking about how she dislikes people from the heartlands going to Holland village, where she lives.
"Listen to her complaints."
Netizens have slammed the Holland Village resident for her comments. They said that her comments were 'dumb' and 'ignorant' and that she was 'an embarrassment to the community'.
STOMPers like Moo have also written in response to the article (Mar 25):
"I refer to the by-now-infamous rant of a girl living in Holland Village about why 'heartlanders' should stay out of her neighbourhood.
"The irony about Samantha’s views is that Holland Village is billed as the main attraction as a 'heartland' in a 'Singapore heartlands trail shop and eat tour'!
"This tour is run by a travel company that specialises in organising tours in Asia.
"This leads me to wonder: Which neighbourhoods in Singapore are categorised as 'heartland'?
"What is the definition of 'heartland'? Who is the judge of such categorisation?"
