We will review suggestion to have LED text in Chinese: SMRT

SMRT says it will review the possibility of displaying messages such as the station names in Chinese, bedsides the English text that is currently on display.

SMRT's reply came in response to STOMPer TS's suggestion to have the LED text in Chinese as well.

SMRT said in its reply:

"We thank STOMPer TS for providing suggestions on how to improve the design of our train cabins (“MRT display should scroll to show Chinese characters too”, 26 April). We would like to share with STOMPers the improvements SMRT has made to our trains over the last few years.

"Since 2006, SMRT has upgraded its fleet of 66 first-generation trains, and the refurbished trains include renewed interiors to provide our passengers with a more comfortable and safe ride.

"Inside each train car, two rows of overhead horizontal handrails with hand straps placed along each row replace the single-row handrail.

"Apart from these handrails, there are seven three-way grab poles in each car for passengers to hold on to. To further aid access, vertical handrails are installed near the train doors.

"In November 2008, SMRT introduced the SMRT Rail Travel Information System, a dynamic travel route map and information system, on board our trains which includes displays capable of showing multi-language text information.

"Currently, the screen displays our security-related announcements in four languages, and we will review the possibility of displaying other messages, such as station names in various languages.

"These route maps are positioned directly above the train doors, which provide good visibility for passengers exiting the train."

Readers, LTA, take a look at today's straits times. Our MM Lee told shanghai that they have to develop a large English speaking pool if they wanna succeed as the worlds banking hub and how every body in all trades speaks English contributing to our success in a world position. So how can we start regressing and start doing things the PRC way when our own esteemed MM Lee us asking them to do things our way.

English rules.

Such a shame don't you think? I personally think they should just stick to English, as it is the primary language which you can totally apply it everwhere! =_=

another comment:

instead of improving the "design" of the train...
make the intervals of trains lesser.

no use of making train nice nice when no one is able to board in.

Agree with @kopisian. PRCs voice is louder then the voice of the locals. Very very sad indeed. Very soon we will lose our unique identity of being multiple-racial, multi-lingual and Singaporean. And ppl will just mistake us for being part of China. *heartbroken*
