Proud mum lets boys fight it out -- in Judo

STOMPer and proud parent Ng Mui Hwa is thrilled by how much her sons, Xander and Nicholas, are enjoying Judo as a sport. She hopes more parents will help develop their children's confidence and passion through sports like this.

Xander, 9, and Nicholas, 7, started Judo classes 3 years ago at Budo Academy.

Singing praises of the non-aggressive martial art in an email to STOMP today (8 Dec), Mui Hwa gushes:

"Judo has helped develop their confidence, concentration, self discipline and restraint. It has showed them they can be powerful without being aggressive.

"The boys are good at the sport too. At a recent regional match, Xander won the Outstanding Player and Gold awards for beating a player 3 ranks above him (orange versus brown belt). Nicholas beat many bigger opponents to pick up a Silver in his category."

As a proud parent who has witnessed the benefits of Judo on her children, she encourages other parents to do the same instead of associating self esteem with good grades and tuition classes.

kind of think about it. last time pepole only follow what the parents tell them to do blindly and cost regrets. but then different kids need differnt way of bring up. hahaha sorry to drag the topic too far

i do agree with you that not to raise our kids to be arrogant. but this kind of things happeneing at the right itme and right amount will help in the growth of kids. if according to chinese teaching this kind of things is showing off, but for current context dont think so. it helps to build a kid. to be assertive enough to know wha they want to do.

this is an interesting descussion. "PROUD, SHOW OFF" when we all did excelent or good in school our mother will go around to tell other people about it. and some will say show off. but i dont think so. it is a good news so she want to share it.

. I only focus on the key contents in this post which in summary shows a proud mum who put her kids as the main focus, judo the sub focus. To rephrase, it is only because her kids did well in judo as an alternative to good grades that leads to the creation of this post for her to show off. Being proud is one thing, showing off is another, don’t mix them up. Anyway, don’t be so defensive, it is good to strive to excel in things other than good grades, so be proud, appreciative of current achievements and strengths but don’t show off out of pride.
