It's raining hail in Bukit Timah: Should we be excited or worried?

Terry, a staff at the German European School on Jalan Jurong Kechil in Bukit Timah, says his students noticed that it was raining hail yesterday morning (10 Sept).

He elaborates:

"I would like to bring to your attention a strange occurrence this morning (10 Sept) at our Primary Campus at the German European School Singapore on Jalan Jurong Kechil.

"During the thunder storm, at about 9.30am, in addition to the rain, we had hail.

"Our students brought this to my attention. I attached photos taken from my mobile phone camera, and one with a small piece of hail held in a hand.

"Unfortunately the hail melted very quickly and was too difficult to get other photos. However we have many eyewitnesses, our students.

"During my 7 years in Singapore I have never once seen nor heard about hail falling from the sky.

"Something that is both exciting, and worrying.

"I am not sure if you received any other reports of this strange phenomenon."

no need to be excited or worried. hail stones are rare but do happen several times in Singapore back in 90s & 80s when I was a kid. The last time it happened was in March 2008, quite extensively in various parts of Singapore, namely Bishan, Toa Payoh and Ang Mo Kio. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/337625/1/.html. It was almost the size of 50 cents coin. I remember back in early 80s, an old woman was hit in the head during a short downpour of hails. Nothing to do with global warming. Just mother nature.

Ice pieces dropping from sky isn't a good sign but I feel happy that it occurs in SG. ^^ I really hope it occurs more often and soon SG will experience real snow. I like cold weathers..

Hey stomper, it is not an uncommon phenomena over here. In fact, hailstones and graupels tend to occur more during summer time in other countries.

Yr definition of hail is completely wrong, that would be the definition of freezing rain.

Hailstones, simply put, are results of intense turbulence in the thunderstorm clouds, and the downdrafts are so strong that they fell to the ground quickly, not allowing enough time and contact with the air for them to melt.

The force and speed with which they reach the ground can be damaging to structures, vehicles and crops.
