Check your bus fare upon alighting: This commuter was overcharged twice

STOMPer Alex urges commuters to check that they are paying the correct bus fares. The STOMPer was overcharged twice recently.

Said Alex:

"Check your fares when you alight from buses.

"In the span of slightly more than a month, I was overcharged twice even when I tapped my EZ-Link card as I alighted from SBS Transit buses.

"On July 20, I was charged the maximum fare which was more than twice of the 73 cents that I was supposed to pay when I tapped my EZ-Link card while alighting from a SBS Transit bus.

"On Aug 22, I was again charged the maximum fare which was more than twice of 73 cents that I was supposed to pay when I tapped my EZ-Link card while alighting from another SBS Transit bus.

"TransitLink acknowledged that both my claims were for overcharging and I was refunded the overcharged amount accordingly.

"The incidents could not have been caused by my EZ-Link card because I had been using it before and after the incidents and I am still using it now.

"It was likely that the GPS system on board the buses were messed up resulting in the maximum fare being charged.

"If this was the case, other commuters on the buses would have been affected as well.

"I wonder how many of such incidents went unnoticed.

"Since the commuters were not at fault, shouldn’t the bus operator voluntarily refund the overcharged amount to them?

"Does LTA monitor the frequency of such incidents?

"Finally, I urge all commuters to check their fares as they tap their EZ-Link cards.

"Don’t assume that once you tap your EZ-Link cards while alighting everything will be fine."

Many passengers prefer to check their fares after alighting and then waste their own time making claims later and complaining a lot in Stomp. They lacked the initiative to verify fare-distance at boarding or reader's mode of operation when alighting and sabotaging themselves to over-deduction.

I've noticed on some SBS buses when the bus is approaching the bus stop, it'll show exit/entry but it'll suddenly switched to entry for 10 secs before switching back to exit/entry at the entrance reader. Why it that so? Overcharging will occur if any commuter unknowingly tap their cards when the switch happens. I've been overcharged twice!

SBS Transit care to explain?

The Vehicle Location System used by bus services can receive error signal from the entry doors-closed contacts. There are instances whereby the doors are just opened and 'Entry' mode appears on the entrance readers. At times, the system auto switched to 'Sleeping' mode at the Exit when the bus approaches the bus bay from a distance of around 50m. This will simultaneously prompt the Entrance Readers to show 'Entry' mode instead of 'Entry/Exit' mode. The glitches of yesteryears are still haunting the system.
