Competition was stiff at International Cosplay Day Singapore on Sunday (Aug 26) as cosplayers flaunted their impressive costumes, but two of the top prizes eventually went to The Sandman and a cute pirate.
30-year-old Barry and 21-year-old 'Sakurazaki' impressed judges with their costumes and won first and second place in the Western and Eastern categories respectively.
Barry thinks he won because the judges could see the effort he put into his character, from Neil Gaimen's popular Sandman series. He says it took him three hours to do his face and body painting. Meanwhile, Sakurazaki, a college student, believes that amping up her provocative anime pirate character was the key to her second place win.
The event was held at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, and featured a catwalk, a competition, and the second annual cosplay chess, with a judging panel featuring cosplay celebritiess Yaya Han and Jerry Polence.
International Cosplay Day started in America two years ago, and this is the first year the Singapore leg is being organised. The event attracted about 1,000 participants.
