Australian police link S'porean to 5kg of drugs hidden within Chinese books

A 49-year-old Singaporean and a 32-year-old Malaysian have been linked to two packages containing an estimated 5.6 kg of heroin concealed within sealed Chinese books.

According to an AsiaOne report, the men were questioned by customs officials after they arrived at Melbourne Airport on a flight from Kuala Lumpur on Friday (Aug 17).

Australian Federal Police had found the two packages in Melbourne's central business district, at the location where the men were due to stay.

Police suspect a total of 5.6 kilos of the drug was concealed within both packages. The men were charged with attempting to possess a commercial quantity of a drug. This carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and/or an AU$825,000 (US$860,000) fine.
