The future looks bleak for five youths who stabbed a rival gang member in 2010 at Downtown East. They pleaded guilty to culpable homicide yesterday.
It makes one wonder why youths would risk their lives and their future to be in gangs.
According to the report in The Straits Times, the youths are facing the most serious charges among the 12 young men who have been charged over their involvement in the clash, which killed 19-year-old polytechnic student Darren Ng Wei Jie.
The five youths, who were all members of the secret society, have been identified as Ho Wui Ming, 22, Chen Wei Zhen, 21, Edward Tay Wei Loong, 20, Louis Tong Qing Yao, 17, and Stilwell Ong Keat Pin, 20.
During the fight on Oct 30 2010, Ong and Tay were armed with choppers, Chen and Tong with fruit knives, and Ho with a screwdriver.
The clash was the result of bad blood between Ong and Dickson Ng Teck Seng, 21, who was Darren Ng's gang member.
Ong told his gang members that he was going to have a one-on-one fight with Dickson Ng at Downtown East.
Armed with a chopper, he went to Downtown East with another gang member and went around asking teens if they were from a rival gang.
Ong bought a bottle of chilli sauce while the other members of his group bought a chopper and two fruit knives. Ho stole a screwdriver.
However, it was Darren Ng and five others who turned up for the settlement talk instead of Dickson Ng.
Outside a fast-food outlet, Ong's group accused Darren and his friends of staring at them.
Ong hurled the bottle of chilli sauce at Darren but he managed to dodge it. Darren then took out a retractable baton and the fight started.
The five youths slashed and stabbed Darren with their weapons during the fight.
Prosecutors pressed for at least 15 years' jail and 12 strokes of the cane for Ong, and between 12 and 15 years' jail and 10 strokes of the cane each for the other four.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Peggy Pao argued that the horrific assault took place on a Saturday evening at a shopping and entertainment hub, causing grave terror to the public.
She added that while the accused persons were young, their vicious and brutal acts robbed another young person of his life and damaged the faith of Singaporeans in the safety of their public recreation areas.
