A 24-year-old man tried to climb up to the second storey of a burning house to save his trapped girlfriend, but his efforts were in vain.
When a fire started on the ground floor of a two-storey home in Taman Pelangi Indah, Johor Bahru, on Thursday, 24-year-old Loh Hui Jin ran to the master bedroom on the upper floor to escape the flames.
However, the door to the balcony in the room was secured with padlocked grilles.
The beautician was alone in the house and screamed for help from an open window. By then, thick smoke had already engulfed the house. She called her boyfriend and begged him to save her. 24-year-old Kee Yung Yue , who lives nearby, rushed over and tried to climb up to the second storey, but failed.
Firefighters arrived at the scene and rescued Hui Jin, who died on the way to the hospital after experiencing breathing difficulties.
