A Chinese girl lost about 27 kg within a year and was reduced to skin and bones, all because she did badly in a math exam.
Wang Xiaowei had always been among the top 20 students in her junior high school in Ziyang of Sichuan province. She had also been a chubby girl, weighing over 60kg.
Things changed when Xiaowei scored 70 out of 120 points for math in the annual high school entrance examination last year. She had gotten nearly full marks in all other subjects, but her math score meant her ranking in the entire city dropped to lower than 2000th.
She was accepted into the best high school, but did not get into the class for the brightest students.
It turned out her low math score was the result of filling in the bubble sheet wrongly, as she had misaligned the sheet. Her father was furious, saying that her exam result made him 'lose face'.
Xiaowei was so overcome by guilt, she lost her appetite and her weight plummeted. When she started high school, she weighed just 45kg.
Her grades improved, but the better she performed in exams, the less she ate. By March, Xiaowei weighed a mere 34kg. She was so emaciated, she needed her mother's support while walking up the stairs.
Xiaowei has finally been diagnosed with an eating disorder and is undergoing treatment.
In another story related to academic stress, China students were given IV drips during their exam period to restore their energy.
