THE former Ministry of Education scholar, convicted of having child pornography materials in Britain in December 2010, cannot seem to stay out of the courts.
Shortly after he was stripped of his scholarship and sent to Singapore by the British authorities, Jonathan Wong Wai Kheong sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl last year.
The 25 year-old, who is now an editorial assistant at a publishing firm here, has since been charged in court with the crime.
The court heard that Wong had met the girl at a church choir early last year. He then went out with her on a few occasions and eventually had sex with her.
The victim cannot be named because she is a minor.
Wong had pleaded guilty to five of 10 charges of sexual offences, including committing an obscene act on a young person, on June 25.
Yesterday, when he appeared again before District Judge Jasbendar Kaur, he was allowed to write his mitigation. He tendered a six-page plea that the deputy public prosecutor (DPP) will respond to next Monday.
Wong's troubles with the law date back to December 2010, when he was sentenced to a six-month jail term in Britain. The jail term was suspended for two years, on condition that he underwent eight months' supervision on child pornography charges.
Following his expulsion from the University of York, his student visa was revoked. He returned home in January last year.
DPP Kavita Uthrapathy told the court last month that Wong and the victim chatted online over Facebook and Skype, calling each other daddy and daughter.
She confided to him about her family problems and her impending move to Australia.
Between February and March last year, Wong asked her if he could talk to her about sex and said he would teach her about it.
Out of curiosity, she agreed.
The following day, Wong took her to a handicapped person's toilet at the Esplanade and told her he had had sex there with his girlfriend, aged 22. The victim rejected his request to follow him into the toilet.
He agreed to accompany her for a 'paranormal activity' on another occasion, on condition that she accompanied him to that toilet for him to teach her about sex.
DPP Uthrapathy said he assured her that he would 'take care of her and be responsible'.
After he had locked the toilet door, he sexually abused her. He did it on another occasion at a staircase landing in Bukit Batok.
Later, on June 19, he took her to a staircase landing at Riverside Point in Merchant Road, where he had unprotected sex with her.
The offences finally came to light after the girl's family moved to Melbourne. Her teacher told her father about her declining grades, and the girl revealed that she had had sex with Wong.
She and her father flew back to Singapore to make a police report on Sept 16.
Asked if he had anything else to say yesterday, Wong, who has been remanded since June 12, said in a clipped British accent that he was 'really, really terribly sorry' for all the people he had hurt.
He said whatever jail time the court chooses to give him, he would make the best of it. 'I will never be inside the courtroom ever again,' he declared.
DPP Uthrapathy said Wong was a menace to society as she sought a stiff jail sentence. 'This is an accused who is clearly twisted and took advantage of a young, naive girl to play out his twisted fantasies,' she said.
Wong has been diagnosed a paedophile by an Institute of Mental Health psychiatrist, who had stated that he has to be kept away from underage females.
Although he had a suspended jail sentence for having child porn in Britain, his parents reportedly had to sell their home to pay off $175,000 in scholarship bond fees to the Ministry of Education.
