She may feel on top of the world after winning the Miss Singapore World 2012 beauty pageant, but 1.6m tall Karisa Sukamto wasn't all that confident about herself all the time.
In an interview with The New Paper, the 19-year-old English Literature undergraduate revealed that she wasn't "too comfortable with my height at first", especially since she was the tallest among her friends growing up.
That personal achievement soon faded away though, as Sukamto stopped growing taller while her friends didn't let up in the height department.
"(Eventually) I realised that the only way to bring harmony to yourself is acceptance. Plus, I'm actually average size for a South-east Asian woman", she said.
With that self-belief, coupled with constant encouragement from her family, Sukamto entered the competition and stood out among the 14 contestants thanks to her wit and intelligence.
When quizzed about how she will fare at the Miss World finals in August, Sukamto was realistic about her chances though unperturbed by the odds that are stacked against her.
She said, "The first thing everyone will say is, 'What the hell is that girl doing here?' They'll all be tall and beautiful and I'll just be...different.
"I'll just stand my ground and represent Singapore. I'll tell all the girls about that and convey what being Singaporean is all about", she added.
